Akili is a curious 4-year-old who lives with her family at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania. She has a secret: every night, when she falls asleep, she enters the magical world of Lala Land.
“Utu” and “Akili and Me”
The word “utu” in the Swahili language means “humanity.” However, “utu” is more commonly used to refer to the African values of shared humanity. “Utu encompasses all aspects of human nature, such as kindness, compassion, respect, responsibility, and self-love.
“Akili and Me” embraces the concept of “utu” by incorporating these core values into its storytelling. By focusing on “utu,” “Akili and Me” not only promotes academic growth through language and literacy but also fosters emotional intelligence and a strong connection to African heritage and values.
About “Akili and Me”
“Akili and Me” is a cartoon series that follows the adventures of a little girl named Akili. Developed by the African edutainment company Ubongo, the series is designed to spark curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and foster a love of learning in children aged 3 to 6 years old. Akili’s magical adventures in La La Land are filled with fun, learning, and exploration, making the show an engaging and educational experience for young viewers.

Ubongo, the creators of “Akili and Me,” is a social enterprise and African edutainment company founded by Nisha Ligon, Rajab Semtawa, Cleng’a Ng’atigwa, Tom Ng’atigwa, and Arnold Minde. Their mission is to support early childhood education in Africa through engaging content that supplements school and preschool learning.
The series promotes diversity and representation in children’s media, celebrating different cultures and backgrounds. Akili’s character, along with the storytelling rooted in African cultural heritage, reflects the creators’ dedication to sharing their perspectives and experiences as Black storytellers.
